Shop and restaurant sales in China during the week-long Lunar New Year festival rose 14.7 percent compared with the holiday period last year to 539 billion yuan ($86 billion), according to the Ministry of Commerce. Food sales increased 9.8 percent in the Feb. 9 to Feb. 15 period from the year-earlier break, jewelry sales surged 38.1 percent and garment sales gained 6.3 percent, the ministry said in a statement posted on its website yesterday.
