Tracy Allen tears up as she talks about a recent home break-in.
DURHAM COUNTY, N.C. --
Thieves involved in a crime spree in one Durham County neighborhood are targeting people's holiday gifts. As many as eight homes off Milton Road have been broken into in recent weeks. Sunday, deputies with the Durham County Sheriff's Department set up a drivers license checkpoint on Milton Road to try and find the perpetrators behind the crimes.
Tracy Allen is one of the victims. Allen and her three children went out for lunch Saturday afternoon, only to come back just an hour later to find her side metal door bent and the door frame torn apart. Thieves broke in and turned her bedroom upside down in search of presents.
She believes someone may have been casing the house and waiting for her to leave. They made off with hundreds of dollars in wrapped gifts, including DVDS, jewelry and a digital camera. What's worse, they also took Allen's deceased grandmother's jewelry box. While the other items can be replaced, that jewelry box cannot.
"I don't care about the presents. I really don't," Allen said, sobbing. "Keep them, but just bring the jewelry box back, the jewelry back. Just set it on the porch. I won't ask any questions. I won't call anybody. Just bring it back, because that's what means the most to me."
Anyone with information in these recent home break-ins should call the Durham County Sheriff's Office.
